SEAPORTS & AIRPORTS

There is a great deal of commercial maritime activity within the region that is sustained by three major seaports and several lesser ports. These ports and their support activities are host to extensive international commercial trade and a cruise ship industry that services the tourist trades throughout the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and Atlantic.

The largest regional ports in South Florida are the Port of Miami, Port Everglades and the Port of West Palm Beach.  The seaports are among the most active ports in the United States.  The Port of Key West and the Miami River port areas are also active trading ports in the region. In addition to the commercial cargo associated with import and export, foreign trade activities, and the nearly 4 million passengers departing annually, the Port of Miami is known as the “Cruise Capitol of the World.”

Major international airports are conveniently located throughout South Florida from Key West to Palm Beach.  Miami International Airport, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Palm Beach International Airports represent the largest airports in the region and provide connections to all countries in Latin America, the Caribbean and Mexico.  Numerous other airports in the region include other international airports, such as Marathon International in the Florida Keys and also private and commercial airports.  Illicit drugs and associated funds are frequently transported via commercial and private aircraft at all these ports.
